Meet Kendall DeLashment of Tony Famous

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall DeLashment.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
All of my family members are musicians or singers so music has always been a part of me. I bought my first home studio in 2012 when I was 21 (now 27) to help my friend record her EP. I ended up writing the majority of the project and she convinced me to start recording my own work. I didn’t release a project until 2017, but that gave me an opportunity to sharpen my skills.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest issue used to be funding everything because I was in school and not working full-time. Now, I think my biggest challenge is breaking through to the next level. My band and I have performed at a few major venues in the city, but hitting those next steps (whatever they may be) have been tough.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a rapper and I specialize in storytelling. My album Checks & Balance outlines different life struggles of being a kid from the south side living in a world that’s controlled by capitalism. It’s also a story about finding balance when you finally reach your financial goals.

I’m most known for my lyricism so I’m most proud of my commitment to that element of my artistry. Mainstream music today often lacks depth so I’m glad that we are able to continue our path when we are pressured to follow the trends.

What separates my work from others is that we (my band and I) do the music that we want to do no matter what is expected of us. If we play for a pop crowd, then we may fuse our sound with Vanessa Carlton. On the other hand, we may play a boom bap set and mash up The Roots with our songs. Either way, we always deliver a great show.

What were you like growing up?
I was extremely nerdy. I watched Batman/Superman all day long when I wasn’t playing sports. Watching those cartoons made me a little more creative and I like to think it contributed to my art.
