Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunnid Jacobs.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Born and raised in Chicago by his single-parent mother, Kelvin Jacobs acquired the name ‘Hunnid’ when a friend from a different side of town discovered that Kelvin was from 118th S. Eggleston. This neighborhood was an area dogged by crime and poverty, referred to by many as ‘The Wild, Wild Hundreds’. From then on, his nickname stuck with him. It would become his identity when he went on to gain rapid recognition in high school. This recognition began when Kelvin started spitting epic freestyles over heavy beats created by peers who would pound their first on the lunch table in a melodic manner. His flair for freestyling no doubt had a lot to do with his natural adeptness to write poetry, which once even led to a piece being published at only 10 years old.
Please tell us about your art.
I create passionate music that reflects my surroundings. The message is strength in struggle. Those two elements go hand and hand in my music. It’s important to paint that picture of where you come from and where you can go. I hope people understand and embrace the authenticity of my story. A story of prosperity through pain, passion and struggle. My artwork is always unique and creative, it usually reflects the concept the song.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Budget, budget, budget! This industry is centered around money. Outside of the anomalies and exceptions more than likely budget will dictate how far you go in this industry unless you establish powerful relationships.
