Today we’d like to introduce you to Aderrick Bobo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aderrick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For years I was a mortgage underwriter. After the industry crashed, I had nothing but time on my hands and started hitting the gym more frequently.
Frustrated with me not finding something within a year or so, my mom suggested that I work at the gym. She said “you go there every day, just get a job there. You know what you’re doing” At first I laughed it off. Soon, noticing the physical changes in myself, I considered what she said.
I started off working in a gym here in the city. My very first day and very first client, it was like the heavens opened and the angels sang. It felt so good, so natural. I thought “why have I not been doing this all along?” It was the most satisfying job I had ever had.
After a year of working at the gym, noticing “their model “and “their philosophy”, I realized how some key “special” things were missing that I ended up doing with my clients.
My boss said “Nice touch, I love how you build your relationship with your clients. They appreciate and love you.” Frustrated with the system and the numbers game at the gym, I left and struck out on my own.
The day after I left the gym, Body By Bobo was established. With 4 clients, I started my business and it has grown from there.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth road? I would not say that. Every career comes with its challenges. Mine was building my book of business and continuing to build it. There was no one there, no example to follow. Mostly I went by my gut and previous retail experience. More than anything, I know how to treat people and I know how I want to be treated. Some things worked quite well and some failed. The failed ideas I learned how to tweak them and make it work for me, the way I wanted. Figuring out there was not guide book, I made my own rules.
Also, learning that it is okay if a client decides not to train with me. It is not a personal attack. Sometimes it’s not a good fit or they want to try something/someone different. I cannot train everyone and not everyone wants to be trained by me.
With that being said, I have some of clients that I have had for most of my career. I am grateful for that, a million times over.
