Today we’d like to introduce you to Fiona Vachachira.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always loved to take pictures ever since my early teen years. Every time I would have a get together with my friends or if there was an event at school, my point and shoot Canon camera would be in my hands. In high school, I thought it would be fun to take a photography class and learn how to shoot with a film camera. Not only did this class teach you how to use an old school manual film camera, but we also were able to develop these photographs that were taken ourselves in a dark room.
In college was when I had really started to get into digital photography. Before beginning nursing school, I had about 6 months off from school. I’m the type of person that loves to stay busy and find new projects to do, so I decided to purchase a DSLR and take a digital photography class at our local community college. For each of the assignments that were assigned in this class, I would have my family and friends model for me and somewhere along the way I began to get asked to take pictures at different events, family/children portrait sessions, proposals, etc. This is when Fi Photography began to form. It started off as a fun hobby and now is turning into a career that I had never dreamed would be real.
Please tell us about your art.
Fine art portraiture is what I specialize in. Capturing memorable moments through the art of photography is my passion. My ultimate goal when photographing an event or portrait session is for my clients to be able to look at these photographs a few years down the line and be able to recall how important these moments were to them and how it made them feel. Whether its proposing to your significant other, your wedding day, your baby’s newborn photographs or even a family portrait session- These are all moments that are to be treasured forever and it’s my utmost honor to be able to capture these moments for my clients.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
With the rise of social media, I think the purpose of photography has evolved greatly. Prints and products are becoming almost scarce but digital images are extremely popular. Even though digital images are what my clients almost always opt to purchase, in most of my packages, I include a variety of prints and products as well. There’s always been something special about having a unique family heirloom.
