Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawrence Kane.
Lawrence, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been in the beauty industry for over 30 years, as a stylist, educator, colorist and trainer. When we found, ourselves moving back to the Chicago area and to the south suburbs we wanted to open a salon that brought back the art of great customer service. We live in a wonderfully diverse community, we wanted our staff to reflect the diversity of the area. We also wanted to make sure that we hired those that would appreciate a unique culture, a welcoming, friendly environment with highly trained staff, services and products that are natural and performance driven. We have assembled the best salon and spa staff in the south suburbs; diverse in age, ethnicity, background, each brings a wonderful story to our team. We have been honored as one the Top 200 Salons in the US by Salon Today Magazine, 6 times since opening in 2010.
We pride ourselves in creating a Guest Experience that carters to each person’s specific needs for hair, skin, nails and body. We have assembled a group of products that cover a wide range of needs for our Guests; Aveda, Lucrece, Blink, Arrow Mattick and OPI.
As an Aveda Concept Salon we are committed to protecting the environment, raising funds and awareness for the Alliance for the Great Lakes. Since 2010 we have raised over $10,000 for the Alliance. We were the first salon to receive the Flossmoor Zero Hero Award by establishing the first Zero Waste Business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When we started in 2010, we inherited an underachieving business and staff of 7 people.
Maintaining our desire to hire friendly professionals we built the business slowly and steadily over the next 7 years. We have grown to 25 professional service providers, assistants, director of operations and trainers. Finding the right people to meet our standards has and always will be a challenge.
We grew our business by being attentive to our guests, respecting the fact that they have options and that they chose our salon and spa.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jonathan Kane Salon & Spa – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are one of the only Full Service Salon & Spas in the area. We have over 25 people that provide the best care and services for hair skin, nails and body care. We are Aveda trained and continue training on a monthly basis. I am most proud of our team. They are so friendly, attentive and caring of our guest and their experience at the salon and spa. They get along terrifically and are a very diverse group of professionals.
In an area where there are many salons and independent stylists, what sets us apart is ability to function as a team. Each member is an employee, not an independent contractor, we each have a vested interest in building the business and making sure our Guests get the best service and keep coming back.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We recently moved to the Homewood area after 7 years in Flossmoor. The new location is in a much better retail area surrounded by other small businesses: pizza places, card shops, coffee shops, etc. The move has offered us the opportunity to have more new clients see our salon, visit and our walk-in traffic has more than doubled. We will continue to add professional staff, train the team and involve ourselves in community events and causes.
