Conversations with the Inspiring Rema Sweis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rema Sweis.

Rema, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As young as I can remember, I’ve always loved fashion and beauty. It was something I was so passionate about and I just loved how I felt. I remember how I felt wearing something that I was so confident in (but looking back they weren’t the cutest outfits LOL). I was on top of the world. Fashion is something that I’ve always been passionate about. Beauty was also something I didn’t dab into until I was about 15. Super young yes, but I loved mascara and how it just transformed my look. Later on, I dove into it and fell in love. The combination of fashion and makeup was a power duo for me.

Fast forward to my second year of college, I went with Communications as my major because I knew how broad it was and that I can somewhat get into the business of fashion, beauty, and entertainment. I landed my first internship with a magazine and I was the Fashion and Beauty Editor. I handled their social media, wrote articles weekly, and managed fashion shoots. I knew this was something that I can do great in and I’m so grateful for having that experience. It was such a great first internship and I knew that that was the road I wanted to take.

My last year of college, I interned at Heron PR Agency. I did all Public Relations Intern duties including social media. I handled big accounts and again- fell in love with social media and public relations. Things were just falling into place and I was finding myself loving different things along the way with every step I took.

Once I graduated from UIC, I got my first job with T and J Designs, an online retail store. I was the Social Media Associate. I worked directly with the CEO, Jennifer Worman, who also happens to be a big-time blogger in Chicago. I learned so much about social media, marketing, and how essential blogging is to businesses now. Here is where I fell in love with blogging. I am so fortunate to have found this position and the people I worked with and met throughout my journey with T and J Designs.

After leaving, I decided to start my own blog and name and its been nothing but up. I’m getting reached out to do things and partner with brands. It’s such a wonderful experience to blog and writes about what you love or what you wear. Since I have a good handle on social media too, it’s been great trying to build something for yourself and pushing yourself to do better.

So funny how every experience I had has led me to where I am today. So grateful!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it’s never going to be a smooth road. It’s how you deal with the bumps in the road that makes you great! Right now, I’m struggling to find my “dream job.” It hasn’t been easy but until your journey starts, KEEP CREATING THINGS until you get that job or promotion or whatever you are looking for. Wise words from my girl Tamara Dhia. I love her journey!

I mean, I’m still starting my journey and I think even when you are successful, your journey hasn’t even started yet.

My advice to women all over the world is following your intuition and what you love and things will fall into place.

It took me a very long time to start my own blog because I wasn’t sure if it was going to be successful or if people were going to love my style or even care about what I write about. I also was so afraid of what others would think of me and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Just do you!! I promise you won’t regret it. Also, having a good support system is so essential. My family and friends pushed me to start this and somewhat gave me the confidence to create something of my own.

Stay positive and think positive and good things will come your way.

What should we know about www.remasweis.com? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As of right now, I blog full time and write about fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. I can go from writing about spring dresses to my favorite show F.R.I.E.N.D.S. I think putting your work into the universe will bring back opportunities that speak to you. I just started blogging about a month ago and have already started working with 4 brands!

I still have so much I want to share about myself on social media and it’s one step at a time.

I’m most proud of facing my fears and doing what I love. I love giving girls advice about fashion, beauty and so much more. I feel so empowered. Social media is such a huge platform now and to relate to so many girls from across the world is amazing. What sets me apart is my sense of style, my writing techniques, and having such a broad blog that I can relate to so many girls on any topic.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think female leadership has come a very long way. I mean look at mainstream media – females are taking over! We still have a lot to improve on as females are getting paid less than men or having so much double standards but we are powerful and dedicated.

But, one of the biggest barriers today I would have to say is a female can never be “kind and friendly” because then she doesn’t seem like a leader but if she’s “strong and tough” she’s intimidating and unlikeable.

I say – take ownership of your career and be yourself and the rest will follow suit.

Girl power baby!
