Today we’d like to introduce you to Geraldine Rodriguez.
Geraldine, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born in the Philippines and living in Germany, Nigeria and the Caribbean gave me the diverse exposure to rich cultures at an early age. These life experiences influenced me to probe into the personal relationship of what people imagine, therefore the subject matter of my work focuses on the reflections of the self within the family and social dynamic. I started my career in art focusing on painting the relationships people have with themselves and others. As I grew as an artist, I began using photography as my main medium. My goal has always been to capture the pure essence of the “self” in situations or circumstances that are not usually exposed. My subjects tend to expose their purest emotional state and evoke a thought or emotion that is personal yet, identifiable to everyone. I want my body of work to uncover the fact that we all may not have the same experiences in life, but we all experience the same emotions. My work reflects what many choose not to expose…themselves.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is inspired by those who are around me, their experiences and mine. I want people to view my photographs and feel a connection no matter what part of their journey in life, they could understand it, because they too at some point in their life, experiences that feeling.
I create a series of photographs that helps me or others evoke, self-reflection and encourage emotional, mental, social and spiritual growth within ourselves and leaves us with the message that we are not alone.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I was fortunate to have a studio at a community art center. I would recommend this to anyone who thrives by being around an artist community. My closest friends are the artist I met there and they still inspire me.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I will be in a group show at Jackson Junge Gallery in Wicker Park, opening on May 11, 2018. I have a solo exhibit opening on July 20, 2018. This will be the first time where I will be exhibiting a new photography series and paintings. The exhibit is “who I AM”, more details will be posted on my website, www.grfineart.com. My work can be viewed on my website.
