Meet Lili Trifilio of Beach Bunny in Lincoln Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lili Trifilio.

Lili, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Beach Bunny originally was only a solo project for about a year and a half starting sometime in December 2015,
and then almost exactly a year ago (May 2017), Matt (guitarist) and Jon (drummer) joined, and then Aidan (bass) in October of 2017. Beach Bunny is still kind of a solo project in the sense that I write the music, but we’re also a band at the same time and I couldn’t have done it without the boys, they’re such talented guys. I think a lot of our success comes from hard work and consistency and we don’t depend on luck, although we’ve had a
lot of amazing opportunities in the past year. We play a show almost every week and if we’re not playing, we’re promoting or working on new songs which I think really helps get the music out there.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I was first starting out, I didn’t know what I was doing or where to begin which was a struggle for me. It was pretty hard to get my name out there and I depended on really time-consuming, unorthodox methods like messaging hundreds of random people on facebook or sending my songs to dozens of blogs that wouldn’t respond. When we went full-band there was also a bit of a struggle figuring out how to play together which was frustrating at the beginning but over time we worked it out.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beach Bunny – what should we know?
Beach bunny is a power-pop project from Chicago that loves flaming hot Cheetos and rock n roll. I think people like coming out to the shows because the music is upbeat and appeals to a lot of different kinds of people since its pop. What sets us apart from others in the local scene is probably that we’re not a ‘garage rock’ band, which seems to be the most common music to make in Chicago at the moment.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We definitely have had some crazy opportunities like ripping gigs with Remo Drive, one of our favorite bands, but we don’t depend on luck to get our music out there. I think in general luck can only get you so far, but hard work guarantees results. Every opportunity we’ve had is because we’ve put in the work to put ourselves out there and I don’t think we would be where we are if we depended on luck to coast us through.
