Meet Falyn Huang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Falyn Huang.

Falyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started out painting as a kid and all the way through high school but always found an interest in photography and fashion. When I enrolled in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I decided to transition into photography and created primarily fashion-based images. I couldn’t find a makeup artist to work with so naturally, with my painting background, I also started doing makeup for my own photos. And now… here I am.

Has it been a smooth road?
HELLLL NOOOOOO. One of the biggest challenges is figuring out how to produce your work on little to no budget. You really have to get creative with things and problem solve with whatchu already got most of the time. Before I started working with other people, I did everything myself.

From makeup/hair to styling, from set building to photographing. Now, I am extremely blessed with a close team that I trust and vibe with who play their own role from pre to post-production. But at the end of the day, we’re all broke and tryna make some magic. However, when its time to pull it all together you just pray to God that it all works out… and 99% of the time… the final product is better than what you envisioned.

Another challenge is simply finding people you trust with you’re creative growth. People who are on your creative team should always challenge you to think harder, to push ideas, and tell you if something isn’t working. Getting honest feedback in order to strive as an artist is extremely important. You learn that people really don’t care about you unless you’re doing something cool. And through that journey of becoming “cool”, very few are willing to give you their time and gift you with an honest critique… to your face.

One last major obstacle and challenge is just having faith in yourself. You have to believe that this just HAS to work out someway, somehow.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Photographer, Makeup Artist, Production Designer – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I kind of got my hands in everything. I’m a photographer, a makeup artist, and production designer/art director. I enjoy the whole process of making something beautiful for myself, my team and my clients. I see an image from start to finish. It isn’t just me showing up with my camera. I literally am that annoying person who wants to know the color palette, who wants to find a story or a moment, who wants to know what the hair options are, the wardrobe, the makeup, the props… food to feed the crew. EVERYTHING. I am there.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about this city is that there are so many amazing artists and designers that start out in Chicago. Chicago homes a lot of very talented artists that are creating fantastic work. As an artist who loves fashion, I don’t find there to be a direct outlet to expand and grow in that department. It isn’t a fashion city. It could be. But I find that Chicago is fearful of challenging that potential.
