Today we’d like to introduce you to Cam Be.
Cam, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a film director/cinematographer mainly working within the documentary film. I am a photographer and music producer as well. I studied film at both New York Film Academy (2006) and Columbia College in Chicago (2008-2010), while previous receiving a bachelor degree at Trinity International University in Communication (2005).
In 2012 I received an Emmy award with NBC Chicago. My first feature-length documentary ‘The Exchange’ received several awards of the film festival circuit in 2015 and is currently distributed through Amazon Video. I released a short documentary earlier this year ‘Where Flowers Bloom’ the making of the Grammy Nominated Hip-Hop album ‘Laila’s Wisdom’ by Rapsody on Tidal.
May 2018, I am releasing my first photo exhibition ‘So I Wrote Love In The Sky’ at Good Details Gallery in Chicago, IL. This exhibition is accompanied by a collaborative musical soundtrack produced by me titled ‘7 Steps to 7.’ I am the Owner and Creative Director of Camovement.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were several challenges along the way. Between starting my company and graduating from college, I worked in the ‘real world’ for a few years before making a commitment to quit my job and return to school full time to pursue a career in film.
This decision financially was difficult. I had to have a lifestyle change for as I was getting my feet off the ground. I was able to grow my business and reputation over time and now have had a consistent career as a filmmaker for 9 years.
With each step in my growth, there has always been challenges. I expect those challenges to continue as I move to new places in my career. I think the most important thing I had to remember is I have to believe in myself before anybody else would believe. That belief has kept me going throughout my career.
