Meet Candice C. Cusic of Candice C. Cusic Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice C. Cusic.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Candice started taking photographs at age six and ruined her mother’s countertop with darkroom chemicals while studying Photojournalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked as a Photojournalist for over 20 years for some of the largest publications in the country, including 11 years as a Staff Photojournalist for the Chicago Tribune, where she was a team member that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000.

She has taught Photojournalism since 2002 as an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University and has photographed weddings for 7 years. She teaches wedding photographers how to capture moments, has spoken at professional seminars across America and Europe, and is the founder of the Moment-Driven Workshop.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Leaving daily photojournalism and entering my career in wedding photojournalism was interesting… I hadn’t been to many weddings! I had to learn lighting, business, build a team and learn how to delegate. I”m still learning, which makes this career even more fun!

Candice C. Cusic Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My career as a photojournalist and photojournalism educator sets me apart from other photographers, I’m trained to focus on moments and blend into any environment. I specialize in Moment-Driven Photography, not portraits of my clients smiling and posing for the camera. My clients and students are attracted to the energy in these photographs, and I love capturing candid moments during portrait sessions.

I just opened my own studio in beautiful West Town (1431 W. Chicago Ave.) and am expanding my business into Moment-Driven Photography for portraits, families and pets!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m proud of the longevity of my career! I started taking photographs at age six, worked for some of the top newspapers in the world, have taught photojournalism across the world and now own my own studio. The next chapter is just beginning, and I can’t wait to see how it ends!
