Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Baum.
Kevin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A creative at heart, I’ve always been drawn to art, whether playing music, or acting, or writing. While on a weekend-long run retreat in February 2017, however, I realized I’d lost touch with that side of myself. Fortunately, I wouldn’t lose touch forever.
The retreat – sponsored by a leading athletic-wear company – brought a small group of us Chicago athletes and influencers together to learn about the brand and their mission. We learned a lot, in a nontraditional, intimate and sincere manner about the brand and ourselves.
An avid runner, I raced through the city’s neighborhoods and Starved Rock with these Instagrammers, photographers, bloggers. We laughed, we ate, we drank. We pushed ourselves. I remember much of the weekend adventure, particularly how much fun my new friends had taking photos and writing about our experience; documenting it. It was truly special to be a part of it all and to be able to collaborate with everyone.
When the trip ended, I decided it was time to get back in touch with that side I’d lost. I started writing again and took up photography.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been anything but smooth and this is why I stay the path. I launched Kevin Joseph last May and it’s undergone a slew of changes in branding and direction as I’ve worked to discover my niche. I’m constantly criticizing my work and questioning my choices as I look for the cruise control.
“Do I post this photo to Instagram and then tweet it? Should I utilize Facebook more (or at all)? Which photo(s) should I post my Stories? Am I using Pinterest properly? What’s Tumblr?”
My head is often full of these thoughts. We create to share, and we need others to appreciate what we share, right? Since inception, Kevin Joseph has been two steps forward, one step back. And it’s great.
Kevin Joseph – A Chicago Lifestyle Blog – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I can’t remember where I heard it first, but I recall reading, “nobody cares about your photographs.” I find some truth in that statement and Kevin Joseph is driven and motivated by it.
My mission is to share bits and pieces of the world as I see it, and with a purpose. I enjoy learning about and promoting through words and photos the city and its businesses and brands that I have interest in. I believe what makes me different (from most) is my genuine interest in both the creative process and organic self-growth versus “posting for likes,” and I hope it’s conveyed through my work.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I find success to be hard to define and often short-lived. There’s always something bigger and better around the corner, isn’t there?
Personally, if I can look back in 20 years and find that I was disciplined enough to weather storms, was honest with myself, and never stopped showing up, I’ll have succeeded.
