Today we’d like to introduce you to Stuart Fullerton.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I didn’t go to art school. I went to Harvard College, studying Greek and Latin, then went to Harvard Law School and became a lawyer. I work full time as a federal prosecutor, which I’ve been doing for 22 years. I started learning to draw and paint after I turned 41.
Please tell us about your art.
I paint and draw the human figure, the portrait, and the landscape–all from life.
My goal is to see and represent what is essential about the subject, whether a landscape or a portrait. That’s my inspiration–it’s the effort to see what’s essential, what’s more than cosmetic. I guess it’s an attitude of inquiry–I’m terribly curious, and making art is a way of asking questions and seeking answers of things that goes beyond the verbal, analytical side of my personality.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Events remind me that my world begins with the here and now, and that I’m responsible for my attitude–that I require humility and patience, but that I will not be forced to lie. Making art humbles me and reminds me of all that came before me, both good and bad. It’s an excellent exercise in gaining perspective!

I exhibit paintings at the Meier Gallery in Houston, Texas, and at national and regional art exhibitions around the country.
