Meet Liz Mares

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Mares.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Liz. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I remember always being drawn to things that formed patterns or repetitions. I always studied how lines intersected against the sky (particularly of architectural structures) or how puzzle pieces fit together to formulate a scene. Out of that, I continued to gear myself towards the study of art; mostly educating myself and learning as I went along.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but in that time, I’ve also had a lot of triumphs. This is the type of momentum that keeps me going and experimenting with my creative process. It’s gotten me this far and with a lot of work and luck, I believe it will bring me even further.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it most definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been so many times I’ve wanted to just give it all up and admit defeat. It can be very difficult to dedicate your life to the creative practice, but I knew about this struggle from the get-go.

Things become a lot easier to handle when you know what you’re up against. In high school I had an art teacher tell me I would never make it as an artist and that I shouldn’t even bother. While that was a serious blowback then, it actually made my drive for success much higher. Those words have been the fuel to keep me going.

Please tell us about Liz Mares.
My art practice is focused on the corporate, public and private placement of artworks in the form of paintings, photography works on paper and mural projects. I work with curators, art advisors and interior designers on custom projects in both the United States and abroad. I enjoy using rudimentary shapes and colorful patterns to address the nature of connection and relationships.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had one thing to take back, it would be going against my better judgment. I wasted a lot of time concentrating on avenues I knew weren’t going anywhere, but always felt I had to try and make them work. They almost never did. I definitely would take that time back and put it to better use.
