Life and Work with Kristen Lowery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Lowery.

Kristen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I wanted to attend beauty school after high school but the idea was immediately shot down as I was encouraged to attend a traditional university. I eventually folded and left home to embark on my collegiate career. Surprisingly, I made it through the first semester but decided to return home once it ended. I was so confused about what I wanted. I didn’t realize that as a 17-year-old high school graduate that I had the ability to make my own choices and near the end of 1998 I gave birth to my first child. Ove the years, I attended community college, had 2 more children, obtained my Associates Degree and by 2008 I’d finally completed my Bachelors. I felt everything was on track. I had my degree, about to start a new job in corporate America and make the most money I’d ever seen. Two years and into the position, the company decided to downsize leaving me afraid, upset and confused yet again. It was during this downtime that my passion for beauty re-emerged not only for interest but for necessity. I thought that, if I learned a trade it would always allow me the opportunity to earn and care for my family. I was laid off in September and by December I’d enrolled in beauty school. I’d literally come back to where I started. I felt vindicated and also empowered.

As I go into my sixth year of being a professional stylist, my eldest daughter has begun her first year of college, my younger daughter is in her junior year of high school and my son is enjoying the ups and downs of middle school! I also took a leap and decided to work for myself and I truly enjoy it!

The most profound lesson I’ve learned from all of this? To fiercely and unapologetically trust my intuition. After all, the light that dreamt up this idea is the same light that led me back to it.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No road is every truly smooth. There’s always an imperfection beit big or small. I’ve been a single parent for 19 years. I have financial challenges. I’ve been responsible for 3 other people outside of myself. It’s very hard. My advice to women is to: 1. Find wise people to associate with. They provoke you to think differently. 2. Always assess yourself. Be honest with how you contribute to situations both positive and negative, learn from them and become better. 3. Always trust your intuition. It’s rarely wrong.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with krislovescolor – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in multi-ethnic, healthy hair care and intuitive color for all hair types. My point of difference I’m versatile in personality and skill set. You can drop me in the middle of Lincoln Park or Bronzeville and I’d be able to hold my own. I value education in both the formal and informal settings.

Who have you been inspired by?
Naming just one seems unfair but I have to say I believe my passion for beauty came from my paternal grandmother. Up until she passed at 92, she always kept herself together. She pressed her own hair and I swear I never saw a gray hair on her head!
