Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Storm.
Marina, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
It’s actually a funny story, because I never planned on being a photographer. I’ve tried all the wrong jobs, before finding the right one. While growing up, I wanted to be a teacher, in my teens I decided I wanted to be an Orthodontist, when I graduated college, I had a degree in Accounting. You could say, I am a dreamer. After graduation, I worked at a Fortune 500 company, in finance. After 6 years and a Master’s Degree, I left my job to become a Real Estate Agent because I always had a love for homes. At that time, I met a high performing Realtor from our Chicago office, who added value to her clients by doing her own photography of her listings. My type A personality kicked in and I immediately went out and bought a professional grade camera. I came home, super excited and took my first photo. I was terrible. The camera sat on my desk for over a year, while the buzz in my office continued to revolve around finding good photographers for listings. Believe it or not, I wasn’t loving my 5th job as a Realtor, and decided I was going to be a photographer.
I spent an entire year on my laptop, searching, reading, watching, trying, failing, eventually succeeding. I lived and breathed real estate photography 24/7. I finally found something that had my full attention. After the first year, I hit a plateau and decided to look at other photographers’ work. I found two photographers whose work I absolutely admired, and to my relief they agreed to mentor me. It has now been just under 2 years and 600+ photoshoots since I decided I wanted to be a photographer and I have no plans to change to career #7. My portfolio has since grown to include local designers, builders, and architects. I can finally say, I love what I do. I am still constantly researching and learning anything photography.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am mainly an interiors photographer. My hope is to inspire people by drawing emotion through my photography. 10 people can take a photo of the same scene, and they’re all going to be different. That’s the best thing about photography.
How can artists connect with other artists?
I would look for social media outlets that connect photographers together. There are so many different photography groups you can join. There are also local meet up groups who plan fun shoots together. I personally enjoy finding photography events that don’t relate to my area of photography because it opens my eyes to so many cool things.
