Shelby, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For many years, I debated on what I wanted to do in life. One day I just sat for hours and wrote all the things that I am passionate about and event planning and design was the first thing I wrote. I knew that if I never was paid to do events, I would still do them. I am enjoying everything about the event industry, from meeting new people, finding new trends and creating happy moments for my clients. So, I made a career out of what I enjoy, and that’s how J’Shanti Custom Events & Design was created.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been pretty smooth. There is a lot of long nights and early mornings, but I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world!

J’Shanti Custom Events & Design is a full-service event planning and production company. We specialize in creating memorable moments from a blank canvas. What sets my company apart, is that my mother, Shirley and I are actually in business together. We call ourselves the Mother-Daughter Dream Team, because we offer services from just planning to full decorating. Our goal is to have a one-stop shop so that our clients don’t have to go anywhere else for services, we assist them from the beginning to the end.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love about Chicago, is the people. There are so many different ethnicities and backgrounds in the city and surrounding cities.
