Meet Deanna Goldstein of Van Buren Gentlemen’s Salon in Chicago Loop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Goldstein.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Deanna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was inspired to open my own men’s salon based on my work experience as a men’s hair stylist. I was motivated to open a shop that embraced the ideas of the stylists and focused on what we wanted for our guests and for our career growth. I started VBGS with six other employees. Our mission was to provide exceptional services to each and every guest, and to provide education and grow the staff to their highest potential. Five plus years later I now employ over sixteen services providers and are still growing as a company.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any other small business, there are always moments that are challenging. We have been lucky enough to not have any major struggles along the way, just minor teachable moments and lessons.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Van Buren Gentlemen’s Salon – what should we know?
We are an upscale men’s only full service salon located in the heart of the Financial District of downtown Chicago. Our stylists and barbers specialize in modern gentlemen’s haircuts and styles and go through extensive training and coaching to be the best in the industry. We only hire professions who have exclusive men’s styling experience and that pass our challenging technicals. Not only do our guests receive the best salon services in the city, but we also give them the best salon experience. We provide a comfortable atmosphere where clients can relax and enjoy time away from the everyday hustle and bustle and even enjoy a complimentary glass of bourbon or an ice cold beer. VBGS has an annual membership option for guests that like to get haircuts, shoe shines and hand details every few weeks. As a company I am proud that we are still growing, still expanding, and we see very little turn over with our staff. Our employees truly do care about their craft and guests and it shows in their work and in our culture.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Hard work and having a good manager is the key to our success. Nora Leathers, the salon manager, has been an extraordinary addition to the salon. She not only runs the salon on a daily basis, she is the key communicator amongst the staff and guests. Also, the VBGS staff knows how important it is to work as a team and not just as individuals. They treat each and every guest as their own and make everyone feel welcome and like they are old friends.
