Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Celis.
Charlie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a small seaside village on the Philippine island of Cebu. We had no running water and most people didn’t have electricity, but we did have rich relationships with the sea and each other. And we had artists too!
My first brush with drawing was actually in history class when I was six. The school could only afford singular copies for textbooks, so my 75 classmates and I took notes by copying the board, where the teacher copied passages, diagrams, and maps from the book. That’s how I found out I was really good at copying images.
When I was nine, I moved to America with my mom. I didn’t know how to speak English, but I did know how to make origami cranes during recess. I quickly became popular on the playground. But it wasn’t until high school that I really embraced creating art. I drew so much in class that my teachers kept encouraging me to take Art class. I think it was their nice way of telling me to stop drawing in their class, but I took the advice to heart. Once I started classes, I also began to submit my work to competitions and shows. I was hooked.
However, when faced with the decision of college, I chose engineering over art. But the idea of being an artist never stopped calling to me. After moving to Chicago upon finishing undergrad, I decided to pursue art instead. The energy and spirit of the city all but demanded it of me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t know many young artists who’d describe the journey as easy. I’ve felt pressure from multiple fronts to set art aside–to be more practical. My parents, engineering school, the financial burdens of burgeoning adulthood, my own self-doubts. But in retrospect, I realize I’m happiest when I follow the art. So I will.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Charlie Celis Art – what should we know?
My main focus has always been people. I’m fascinated by the expression of emotions and the innate sensuality of being a human being. Those are the themes I explore within my art. The basis of my style is rooted in realism, but I like to play with the relationship between colors and feelings.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My friends have always been my biggest cheerleaders. They provide so much emotional support, and I know I would not be where I am today without them.
