Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Quinones.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Meghan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As far back as I can remember I have loved creating. I was the kid in grade school who loved art class and anytime I was able to pull out my art supplies during class. The feeling of joy I got when I was making something was undeniable. I was in my happy place whether I was creating a picture frame out of Popsicle sticks, sewing my own scrunchies for my hair, or teaching myself how to make jewelry.
In May of 2011 I got engaged and started planning my wedding, or as I called it, my “Crafting Olympics.” With the help of my super talented mom, I created everything for the big day. I designed the invitations, made my jewelry, designed all of the flower arrangements, and made all of the decorations at my reception. My creativity was taken to the next level with all of my wedding DIY projects. I was hooked on the DIY high I got from my constant wedding projects and was truly sad when all of the creating came to an end.
After my wedding I was determined to find a way to keep up the DIY momentum and continue on my creative journey. I knew I wanted to share my creative projects with others since people were always asking how I made “this” or “that”. In January 2013 I started my blog www.happinessiscreating.com. I began posting DIY project tutorials and sharing them on Pinterest and Facebook. This was my creative outlet from my “real” job. I would spend countless hours on weekends creating projects and getting blog posts ready for the following week. My blog became a second job (a job I wasn’t getting paid for), but I loved every minute of it!
After my blog was up and running for a few months my excitement and passion grew even more. I remember asking myself “why couldn’t I be someone who loved their job and got paid for doing something I was truly passionate about?” I guess the universe heard me because four months after starting my blog, I happened to be at the right place at the right time and my career was about to take a major shift. I met one of the Co-Founders of Blitsy through a mutual friend. We talked about his company that sold craft supplies and my blog that focused on DIY projects. A few weeks after we chatted, I was offered a position as their full-time DIY blogger. Two weeks later I quit my job and took the risk of a complete career change. Even though I am no longer with Blitsy, I am still embracing my passion by sharing projects tutorials and videos.
Has it been a smooth road?
I was lucky enough to start my blog and shortly after land a full-time job where I was able to share my DIY projects. However, the company made some changes and got rid of my department earlier this year. So, now I’m back on my own trying to continue my passion for crafting on by posting more projects on my personal blog and creating video for crafty brands.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Happiness is Creating story. Tell us more about the business.
I love sharing how-to tutorials on my blog. I think there are so many people who don’t think they’re creative. By providing step-by-step instructions for on-trend projects, my hope is people will have the confidence to try them out on their own. My favorite projects are creating the look for less, especially home decor pieces I see at Crate and Barrel and West Elm.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The crafting industry is always evolving, I think more and more DIY bloggers are making sure they have a presence on social media, especially Instagram. Video is also something that has become very popular the last few years in the DIY/crafting industry. DIY video tutorials are all over Facebook.
