Today we’d like to introduce you to Al Skalecke.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always had a passion for fishing. In 1970 was newly married and my wife and I would travel during the summer to different fishing destinations. This became a weekend activity, traveling to Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan. As time went by the traveling took a tool.
During 1975 salmon fishing became very popular on Lake Michigan, in the Chicago area. The salmon phenomenon as taking place in my own back yard. In order to fish for salmon a large size vessel was needed; I decided to purchase a boat and enjoy what Lake Michigan had to offer.
My hobby soon become unaffordable; slip fees, boat expenses, fuel, etc. So, in order for me to enjoy my pastime I had to recreate it into a profession. In doing so, I had to be in compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations, attaining a commercial U.S. Coast Guard charter boat captain license; correct vessel licensing insurance, and all required state, county and federal requirements for operating a charter boat business.
During the years, I found myself enjoying many aspects of the charter boat business, especially meeting people from all walks of life, enjoying time spent on the water. Offering pleasure cruises, river tours, overnight live aboard (Bed and Breakfast).
Now, 40+ years later, I still enjoy my endeavor.
Has it been a smooth road?
As in all businesses I have experienced ups and downs. When the economy was good the charter boat business was successful, when the economy was not good I suffered losses, especially September 11th attack on the twin towers.
Today, there are many struggles because of the broad spectrum of unregulated charter boat regulations.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Capt. Al’s Charter Boat Fleet – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I own and operate a charter boat fleet in Chicago, IL. I have been in business for 40+ years. I offer pleasure cruises, architectural tours, sport fishing trips, overnight/weekend live aboards (B&B), bachelor and bachelorette party cruises and engagement cruises on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River.
I am proud that my business has been operational for over 40 years.
The business is diversified. Example, most fishing vessels are licensed for a maximum of six passengers. My vessel, Manytimes II is U. S. Coast Guard licensed for a maximum of 16 passengers.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the skyline, the pulse and energy of Chicago. I have lived in Chicago my entire life.
