Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Harkins.
Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Treadfit began as an idea to fill a need within the community. With five children, I often turned to my treadmill to squeeze in workouts. After years of running distance, I began mixing shorter bursts of speed and incline on the treadmill with strength training. I saw dramatic results from this combination and began to formulate a business plan that incorporated this combination into a class format.
My passion for fitness and involvement within the community drove me in my efforts. Treadfit opened its doors in the Beverly neighborhood in August 2015, in a small 1300 square foot storefront with eleven treadmills and two instructors. In two short years, Treadfit moved to a larger location, added five treadmills and seven instructors, and most recently added it’s the second location in Western Springs.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been glitches along the way, especially in the beginning.
While moving to a larger location in Beverly and into our space at Western Springs, the build-out phase was stressful. However, both spaces turned out great and clients love the urban feel.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Treadfit – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Treadfit offers 50-minute high-intensity classes in a small group setting. Each workout incorporates periods of intense anaerobic exercise with periods of recovery and strength-building exercises. This type of high-intensity interval training has been proven to increase endurance and improve fat burning – leaving clients stronger, faster, and leaner. Before the start of each class, clients receive a heart-rate monitor to track heart rate zones and accurate calorie burn. Clients on average will burn between 400-800 calories per class.
Treadfit stands out from similar corporate chain gyms by offering classes with a maximum capacity of 15/16 people per session, allowing trainers to work more intimately with clients to achieve their fitness goals and optimize performance. All Treadfit classes are led by experienced and certified trainers, and feature workouts open to all fitness levels, including walkers, joggers, and hardcore runners. Classes are open to all adults and teens, ages 16 and older.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am excited to continue to grow our client base at each location and to promote goal setting and the importance of a healthy lifestyle with our clients.
