Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Caughlin, MD.
Benjamin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I completed my residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago where I trained with some of the leaders in facial plastic surgery. This was followed by a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery to gain specialized training in at the University of California in Orange County.
I am staff at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County to treat facial trauma, facial cancer reconstruction, burn scars and to teach surgical techniques to both the University of Illinois and Northwestern Surgical Residents. At the Jessie Brown Veteran Affairs Hospital of Chicago, I am the surgical liaison for developing facial surgical treatment options for the transgender population.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always ups and downs but I have been blessed with good support and coworkers. It has been and continues to be a fun ride.

I focused solely on facial plastic surgery because I feel strongly about sub-specialization in medicine to maximize patient results. My aesthetic endpoints have evolved so that I appreciate a slow transition of patients to a smooth and youthful look with a focus on a natural appearance. In my view, the “overdone” look can be less attractive than a naturally aged look. It is finding this balance that is key.
My philosophy is to embrace and enhance the individual inherent beauty that each person has by using specifically learned and proven techniques to camouflage or correct any imperfections. What sets me apart is that I do most procedures awake in the Kovak Cosmetic Center surgi-suite without general anesthesia. This is ultimately safer for the patient and allows a quicker recovery. We have perfected the art of making patients comfortable and throughout my training, I have learned to block and do these surgeries without pain to the patient.
For me, it is all about having happy patients. The main goal is to make sure we are accomplishing what the patient is looking for. I do my best to guide the patients into what I feel is aesthetically attractive but the main goal is happy patients and being clear while taking the time to listen to the patient always pays off in the end.
