Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanna Morfogen.
Hanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started practicing yoga as a form of conditioning while I was studying dance in both high school and college. I was immediately drawn to vinyasa yoga for the rhythm, flow, and expressiveness of the practice, and I also loved the non-competitive nature of taking a yoga class without the pressure to perform. While in college I decided to enroll in a 200-hour teacher training program at Core Power Yoga to deepen my practice, join a strong and loving community, and hopefully have a job to supplement my dreams of dancing professionally. That 200-hour training changed everything for me. I was just about to graduate from college and was offered a job teaching yoga at McFetridge Yoga & Fitness studio. Shortly after I became the Yoga Program Coordinator there. I have watched myself and this studio grow tremendously over the past three years and I am so grateful for the journey and for the community we have built.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every profession, every industry, every job has its struggles. The amazing thing about the yoga industry and what sets it apart from anything else is that it is rooted in compassion, connection, service, healing, and love. So as struggles arise I always know that we have an incredible team of teachers, mentors, students, and community members who make going to work every day an absolute joy, and who are always there to support each other through hard times.
Please tell us about McFetridge Yoga & Fitness Studio.
McFetridge Yoga & Fitness Studio is a unique studio within the McFetridge Sports Center which also has an ice hockey rink, figure skating, and tennis courts. I like to call it our no-frills yoga studio. We are rooted in serving our community by offering the healing benefits of yoga with a down-to-earth vibe. We have both heated and unheated classes for all experience levels ranging from complete beginner to experienced practitioner. I like giving my instructors the reins to be able to teach their own formats during class and in workshops so we have a wide variety of yoga & fitness classes including: Vinyasa Flow, Slow Flow, Forrest Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Gentle Yoga & Meditation, Yoga Sculpt, Mat Pilates, Yogalates and Total Body Toning. We host occasional workshops along the topics of yoga & essential oils, building your own home practice, props for all levels of asana, chakra balancing, and more. Our classes are extremely affordable – probably the cheapest you’ll find in the city! – and our class sizes are comfortable enough so that you can have your own space and also get individualized attention from the instructor.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in a small town in northern California where we were always playing outside, everybody knew everybody, and even as kids we walked everywhere – to school, into town, and to our friends’ houses. I have very fond memories growing up there and they all involve being outside – whether we were hiking, going to the beach, camping, or just playing outside – I was always active, adventuring, and curious about the world around me. I think this gave me my love for and connection to nature and the constant need to take deep breaths of fresh air whenever I can. City living has its benefits but I definitely try to escape as much as possible!
