Meet Reese O’Toole of Joycoast in North Side

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reese O’Toole.

Reese, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had a few watches in my arsenal that I would wear occasionally, but it wasn’t until 2016 that I realized all of my watches were so similar to everyone else’s watches. I wanted something new, unique, and completely different that would stand out! Something that I didn’t even know existed. I started searching for the most unique watches I could find and finally stumbled upon a new idea for eco-friendly watches made from renewable resources (wood)!

From the moment I picked up my first wooden watch- it was amazing. It was so lightweight and beautiful, it quickly became my favorite watch. I wore it daily and received so many compliments on it.

That’s when Joycoast was born. I wanted Joycoast to be more than just a watch company. I wanted it to represent a fun and joyous lifestyle. Not a super serious company with strict policies and guidelines.

So, from there I naturally went to my garage and hand carved my first prototype watch – just kidding! I don’t think anyone would want to wear a watch that I made with my own hands – it would look ridiculous!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business is not as easy as it sounds. People tend to think “build it and they will come”. This usually is not the case. It takes a lot of hard work and persistence to get in front of the right audience and deliver a successful marketing message for a brand. Also, when it comes to fashion, people tend to have strong brand preferences, so it is important to establish yourself and offer truly high-quality products.

Joycoast – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Joycoast focuses on creating fashion accessories such as wooden watches and sunglasses that are best-in-class, eco-friendly, and backed by our amazing customer support (me).

We donate 10% to a rotating charity that is in line with current events. Currently, we are donating to help Puerto Rico. Next month, it may change to benefit another current issue a part of the world is facing!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I will feel as though I have succeeded when I see random people in the street wearing Joycoast watches!
