Today we’d like to introduce you to Kofi Hughes.
Kofi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After a short stint in the NFL, I went through an identity crisis, not sure who I was or what I would do or become, my whole life was self-centered, and all about football. I started working as a personal trainer in Indianapolis while finishing my degree and found my purpose in serving others. I started praying that God would bless me with a space, to love and cultivate people the way He loved and Cultivated me. 3 months later I get a phone call from Brandon Marshall (I had trained with Him in Weston, FL for the NFL Combine). He was checking in with me to see how I was doing and what I was up to. He asked if I had plans that weekend if I could do him a favor and drive to Naperville, IL to check out a space he was thinking of buying.
When Brandon Marshall asks you a favor you do it lol. I drove out there and to my surprise, He had already purchased the facility, and He wanted me to build it. I finished my degree 4 months later, had my bags packed in the car after my last final and moved to Naperville. Built the gym from the ground up, it is state of the Art and absolutely beautiful. It was being two and a half years and we have quite a presence in the community and the gym is doing awesome. We are known for #TheFitSpeedWay. a culture created on expert training and nothing but Love. Fit Speed is a safe haven for many, a Home, a place to find yourself, a place to become the best version of yourself. I’m so grateful for the growth our facility and our Fit Speed Family has seen over the years. I still am in awe of the opportunity I have every day to Love and Help people grow.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I didn’t know 1 person in Naperville or Chicago. to be 22, build a gym and not know a soul, is quite the obstacle. 2 and a half years later we have over 150 members, we have trained NFL athletes, Olympians, D-1 Athletes, Ironman competitors, Stay at Home moms, HS athletes, and our oldest couple is 76 years old training 3 days a week. There’s not much growth on a smooth road with no detours, I can appreciate the entire journey, all of the struggle.
