Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Toh.
Paul, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My brother Sam and I were born and raised in Chicago. In 2015, we collectively decided we’d like to start a business that is based in and serves the Chicago area. With the assistant of a Business Coach we explored the world of franchising and found The Flying Locksmiths to be a great fit. We enjoy the trade and we find this companies philosophy and values to be consistent with our own. After opening for business in 2016, we’ve been seeing a steady increase in opportunities to service businesses and retail spaces in and around the Chicago Area. I can’t say we have any profound growth strategy. We simply seek to provide quality customer service one customer at a time. We augment this with investing time to build our online presence as well as actively participate in relevant business chambers or professional associations.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know any business owner who would describe the process as smooth. In my experience, starting a new business is comparable to having a small infant. It needs lot of care and attention. You don’t know what you don’t know and there are anxiety filled days as you solve present problems and consider future stumbling blocks to growth.
Please tell us about The Flying Locksmiths – Chicago.
When most people hear The Flying Locksmiths they tend to assume we help people who get locked out of their home or car. Although we do that on occasion, in reality we are a door and lock security company. We provide service and repairs to retail spaces, hotels, restaurants, schools and commercial buildings to service and repair their doors. As you can imagine doors at schools, at coffee shops or shopping centers all over the city are opened and closed thousands of times each day. This usage, with Chicago’s rough weather patterns, cause wear and tear on the doors and the locks and lead inevitably to service being required.
We also service residential customers to provide security solutions for their home. We like to be involved in assisting customers towards electronic locks or access control systems. We also serve property management companies that have to deal with door or security issues as tenants move in or out.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have a lot of wonderful childhood memories. I’m not sure if this one is my favorite, but it is top of mind when I first hear this question. I was a child of the 90’s. It was a wonderful time being a Bulls fan and I have a lot of fond memories watching Michael Jordan play the game. He is and was the #GOAT in my opinion. I still remember watching his final epic shot as a Bull, hitting the game winner over Brian Russel to win game 6 and earn the Chicago Bulls their 6th NBA Championship.
