Meet Jim Dunbar of Mosquito Joe of Chicago North in Edgebrook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Dunbar.

Jim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For many years, my interests had been in business ownership. After a hiatus in my personal career, I started my search for a business to start or purchase. Looking into several different arenas, the Mosquito Joe franchise and atmosphere was an easy decision. The corporate team that we have was everything that I had been searching for. It’s hard to pass up a company that’s slogan is “Outside is fun again”. Additionally, Mosquito Joe is listed among one of the best places to work.

In 2016, I opened my first territory and this year we will open our third. Currently, we have a small staff but with the increase in territories, we are growing rapidly.

Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth road, that is a good question. Business ownership, in my opinion, is filled with challenges rather than struggles. We have a good group of owners who share ideas and chances are someone has been through an experience before. To directly answer the question, there are two challenges I’ve faced. First, letting people know that we are in the Chicago area. Mosquito Joe as a whole has been in business for many years, however we are relatively new to the Chicagoland area. Getting our name out there takes a little time. Our second issue was, employees. All technicians need to be licensed, and it can be difficult to find employees.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mosquito Joe of Chicago North story. Tell us more about the business.
Mosquito Joe offers unique solutions to make outside fun again – without the nuisance of pesky mosquitoes, fleas and ticks. Our certified technicians visit your property to provide a barrier spray, delivering effective mosquito control treatments to make your yard itch-free. Mosquito Joe also offers special event sprays for BBQs, weddings, birthday parties, and more.

My specific location services Chicago to Kenilworth, Buffalo Grove to Wauconda, and Lake Forest to the Wisconsin border.

As a company, I take pride in our services helping people. After speaking to customers, it is very surprising how many are allergic to mosquito bites. It has also been great to be part of an organization that gives back. For example, one of the campaigns we did last year was with Nothing but Nets. With the help of our customers across the US, we raised money to donate mosquito nets to cover children’s beds in Africa.

Our services set us apart from the others, as we provide a fantastic customer experience. Our services are tailored specifically for each property. We are focused on the satisfaction and education of our customers. We enjoy developing a long standing relationship with those we service.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As far as Mosquito Joe of Chicago is concerned, mosquitoes will continue to be our main focus, although we do have plans of adding treatments for other insects in the near future.

In reference to the overall industry, there are growing concerns about viruses such as Zika and West Niles. Understanding of diseases spread by mosquitoes has increased significantly over the past few years. Our company continues to improve the necessary protection against these viruses.
