Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Davis.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alyssa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Windy City Performs is one of Chicago’s most vibrant performing arts organizations, and home to Windy City Theatre Company and the Conservatory for Young Artists. The company provides classes, camps, and shows for all ages at its Jefferson Park campus, and in schools around Chicagoland.
Founded as Youth Company Chicago in 2012, Windy City Performs has grown into a bustling program that serves over 1200 students a year in education programs, and performs for thousands and thousands of audience members. More than just another theatre company, Windy City Performs has become an artistic home where teachers, students, parents and community members learn, create, perform, and inspire each other.
In 2015, we renovated and opened the new Jefferson Playhouse, a 70-seat venue that allows us to showcase our students and professionals in a beautiful, intimate black box-style theatre.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a relatively smooth road-we have grown from a Musical Theatre Performance Studio into a Conservatory for young Artists that includes everything from Dance to Broadway Bound to specialized Auditioning Classes. We have also found a home in School sites in the Jefferson Park area, reaching out to roughly 1,600 students in the Jefferson Park and surrounding area.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Windy City Performs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We offer rich music theatre education and performance experiences for the families of Chicagoland through our four program divisions: MAINSTAGE, YOUTH STAGE, TEEN STAGE, and KIDSTAGE. Our School site programs and Kindermusik classes add additional learning opportunities for even more families.
What sets us apart from other companies is that we treat students as young artists-and we believe our students can command their own audiences. We give students the responsibility to memorize their own lines, choreography, and blocking, which results in a truly unique, student-driven performance.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Windy City has loved working with a diverse group of students of all age groups (ages 4-18). We love that our students are able to take control of the stage and tell interesting, dynamic stories.
We have found our students to be driven, motivated, and interesting to watch onstage. This sort of interest only comes from students who are willing to put in the hard work at the beginning in order to tell an excellent story!
