Meet Mel Dermody of HEARING WORLD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Dermody.

Mel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
While growing up with a hearing loss, I could hear and understand a lot but would miss out on things. For example, I was hearing 70% to 90% of the time, I was graded on these numbers at school and only partook in this amount of conversation with my peers. While this was deemed good enough by some, the harsh reality was that I was missing large portions of my life.

I often questioned my sense of belonging to groups and being a part of society and group conversations. Having acquired licenses in both Illinois and Indiana. In the past 5 years, I have worked in business office settings and worked alongside Ear Nose and Throat doctors. This has allowed me the opportunity to learn more about ear diseases and corrective procedures. I have opened a hearing aid center in the South Loop of Chicago with free parking facilities. I invested in the most modern and up-to-date testing equipment and I work with the best technology from every hearing aid manufacturer.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Attending high school in Granard, Co. Longford, Ireland I was exposed to large classrooms. My parents helped to fit me with smaller, more functional hearing aids than I previously wore. There had been advances made in the hearing aid industry with the move from analogue hearing aids to small in the canal hearing aids. Although small, they were never out of sight and in my later teenage years, I was conscious of how they looked and how people perceived me. I questioned could these devices be smaller and could they work better.

To put hearing loss more into perspective, if I picked up 75% of what the teacher was saying when I was being graded out of 75% instead of 100%. This is the difference between failing and passing at school. Often when someone tells me they get by with their hearing, I think about how they are limiting themselves from learning or only hearing 75% of their life. Trying to put the pieces together for that extra 25% can be stressful. Thankfully new technology has helped
