Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Farr.
Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Right after completing dental school in 2005, I worked as an associate dentist for a group practice in Huntley. After working several years there, I left Huntley for five years to pursue entrepreneurship in Barrington, I was then approached by former colleagues about returning to Huntley.
Apparently, I left a really big footprint in the minds and hearts of those I served in that community. It was this draw that made me decide to return, so in May 2014, I opened up a brand new state-of-the-art practice in Huntley. I have enjoyed continued growth and prosperity and feel that patients are my extended family. I treat everyone the way I would want to be treated and my passion for providing the highest quality care that I can continue to drive me now just as it did when I matriculated from school.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I grew up in a low-middle class family and while I had what I needed to survive, including loving support from some of the best parents anyone could ask for, every step of the way demanded that I work hard and do the right thing.
Inculcating my father’s strong work ethic and tenacity finally paid off with acceptance to several dental schools, including my first choice program, despite not being accepted into a dental school program right away. Not taking the opportunity for granted, I excelled at all my studies and graduated near the top of my class, winning many awards from my professors and faculty along the way. Getting established with my own practice during the Great Recession didn’t help, but I had no control over the timing of that. My father was a small self-employed butcher in Chicago and prided himself on giving his customers quality and exceptional service.
So I continued on, applying all of the work ethic taught by my father and implementing his philosophy of always providing this high quality and excellent customer service. I wanted to find a practice that I could come into as an associate dentist, learn the trade from the senior, and take over the practice. I never found that. I wound up figuring it all out on my own through trial and tribulation. Ultimately, I was able to successfully come through by just treating people right.
Please tell us about Smiles by Farr, Ltd.
My practice is a general dentist office that specializes in providing the highest level of care and customer service. I maintain an emphasis on implant and restorative dentistry, combining both modalities to give my patients the best options to restore them to health and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I perform all aspects of general dentistry and excel at almost everything that I do.
I am known for my calm, courteous, and professional style, being honest with people, and explaining treatment needs to them in terms that they understand. My bedside manner speaks for itself, and I hear often that patients are so glad that they found me. It is not uncommon for them to throw words out like “best” and “amazing” when they experience what I do.
What sets me apart from others in my industry is my dedication and willingness to put my patients’ minds at ease about getting dental care. Let’s face it, not everyone loves going to the dentist. But what I do at my practice is instill faith back in people that dentistry doesn’t have to be terrible, in fact, can be pleasant, and the proof is in all of the smiles and tears of joy that I get to create. The profound impact reassures me that I am doing a good job at having a positive impact on humanity.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory as a child really is a bunch of memories of hanging out with my dad at his butcher shop, watching as he brought happiness to his customers and listening to them rave about the excellence of his products.
