Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony J. Marinaccio.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Anthony. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated from Northern Illinois University and after a couple months at home I moved to the city of Chicago and jumped right into residential mortgage lending. I had a passion for housing and loved interior design, but the finance side of the business intrigued me the most. I was so engaged with the notion of being able to invest such a small amount of capital, down payment on a home, and yield large returns based on the full value of that home; market appreciation and leverage.

When you know the only thing you really own in this industry is your name, integrity and honesty is the way to the top. In this large sized city of Chicago, it’s within the local streets where the great ones start to connect. I love that this industry and this city is small enough that the difference between easy going and hard to deal with can make a major impact on your business.

Ego and the simplicity to work great with others, while leaving an impact on clients is a major reason why I love doing what I do, right here in this town. Word spreads fast, and when you do a great job people come to you and you get to decide who you can make the best impression on. However, when your not a team player, you fall off fast and thin out the competition. I have a deep respect for the most reputable people in real estate.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nowhere near smooth! in fact, this road has also helped me learn how to be a patient dad to my kids.

A major part of my business, over 95%, is dealing with buyers (vs people already in a home refinancing their loans – if this deal has issues, no worries bc these clients are already in the home). The buyer side of the business requires me to be the most professional and highly emotional person I have ever had to have been. You need to quickly relate to buyers and understand their personal goals and how that can affect their well-being (where they live) as well you need to be a financial advocate in educating them on every single option they have to allow them to make a solid decision for themselves. When you buy a home, you have to spend a lot of money, but you also need to make sure you want to stay there for some time.

You cannot teach emotional professionalism to a newbie in the industry, they must learn over time and make a lot of mistakes (never the same one twice) to truly become a very polished professional. What this industry can then do to you, is overnight when the market falls or housing crashes, everything starts over and the rules change. If you do not know how to adapt and thrive, you die. While market conditions have a major impact on your business, it’s what you do with those changes to find a new way where other’s aren’t, to set your self apart and deepen your knowledge.

I am in my 16th year of the business, and to many, that may not be a long time, but this year I turn 38, so I was only 22 when I was selling my first mortgage to a buyer. Then, the average age of a buyer in Chicago was 35 years old, and I built many relationships at my young age. I wish I could go back!

My business in helping people learn how to mortgage a home. From there they hire me to help them get that home loan. I shop the hell out of their mortgage by going to other major banks to find the cleanest smartest mortgage for my client’s needs. Every single mortgage loan I do is never the same as the last. I know a lot of people that make just about the same amount of money, but they way they handle their investments, manage debts, and their spending habits, changes the appetite of every single bank.

What makes my job even harder, is that the banks change their rules faster than my client come back for their next home(s). To me, it’s job security, but it comes at a toll. Working hard, never checking out, and always demanding the best for your clients. I keep myself educated and rely only on myself to do so, so when others can help me learn, it’s icing on the cake!

I know for a fact, that I am known for being one the most knowledgeable mortgage lenders in Chicago, and that my educational approach to teaching my clients how to mortgage a home is far beyond what many others are doing. I encourage my clients to shop my services because it only solidifies what I do, as different and better.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that I can literally visit and enjoy each neighborhood in the city from Logan Square to the South Loop in one day. I could eat breakfast at Manni’s Delli, grab a 2nd coffee and egg harbor, swing over to old town for some spices and lunch (or cut back a little to KiKi’s Bistro) then head back up to the Gold Coast for drinks and RL and NoMI and run around Oak Street for shopping (when I’m wife my wife I stay away from Chanel and Hermes), then as things settle down I can sit sidwalk for dinner in the Tiragle, and get lost in a club with a DJ… or drive home 2o miles away and chill with my babies (may fav).

I would trade just about any sports ticket to go see my Blackhawks, hockey to me is the sport of choice.

But I tell you what, I’d really love to see more companies headquartered here, because they not only bring jobs, they bring neighborhood transformations, cool people, and springboard money into local-local markets. We have a lot of room to grow but we also have a lot of growing up to do as a city…. however, it’s on its way, so get on the train now!
