Meet Adam Mizner of Adam Mizner Audio in Roscoe Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Mizner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was younger I was really interested in becoming a performing musician. My dad often played around Rockford IL as a part of numerous local cover bands. This was my first influence to pursue learning the drums. As I continued to learn how to play the drums, I became interested in learning how to become a better vocalist, as well as learn to perform various other types of instruments.

Eventually, the fun I was having with all of this as a hobby appeared to me much more as a potential career choice. What was holding me back from obtaining a job as an audio recording engineer? The answer: nothing!

My initial interest in the recording arts had me interested in recording music; but, this eventually moved on to recording and designing sound for film. Most recently, it has moved on to developing and recording various podcasts in the Chicago area as I completed my master’s degree in the Sound Arts and Industries program at Northwestern University this past year.

So, don’t ever feel limited by a dream you might have. Pursue it with everything you’ve got. Living a dream is not an unrealistic intention and I am very thankful and happy that I can attest to that.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe that the biggest challenge I’ve had has been my attempt at making all of this work with my epilepsy condition. I’m thankful that my condition hasn’t limited me from pursuing the work that I enjoy doing so much, but it is something that is always on my mind and has had me worried about the kinds of situations I may create for other people that I work with. I have been diagnosed with epilepsy since I was a kid and it has been something I’ve had to learn to work around and keep moving forward.

Adam Mizner Audio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a freelance audio engineer that specializes in production and post production audio. Whether that requires setting up and recording an interview for a podcast, placing microphones on talent to record dialogue for a film scene, or help record various musicians for the creation of a new album, my experience is versatile and I am always happy to help create the best sounding product.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I have just a few basic requirements for success that I’ve set out:
1) If you enjoy what you do and don’t wake up every morning hoping for a new career to fall in your lap.
2) If you like to learn from your own career and are okay with accepting good and bad criticism because you have a desire to learn from it.
3) If your job means more to you than just the paycheck it might bring.

Overall, if you’re happy with your job, always enjoy challenging yourself to get better, and love it no matter what, I’d say you’re incredibly successful.
