Today we’d like to introduce you to Aviva Cohen.
Aviva, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The road to parenthood is a very exciting time. That said, it can also present a couple with numerous challenges. On our journey to parenthood, my spouse and I encountered numerous obstacles. I recall it as a lonely, sad, and somewhat isolating time. What also occurred to me at that time was that there were few community-based resources for support services.
Thus, The Blossom Method was a labor of love born out of personal experiences, and a desire to “pay it forward” so that other women and couples would have easier access to therapeutic and other supportive services that we felt we struggled to find yet so desperately sought. As the peri-natal loss coordinator at Prentice Women’s Hospital at Northwestern for the past 9 years, it has been my passion to support others as they maneuver through some of life’s darkest hours.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been smooth by a long shot. Our business went through some of the growing pains typical entrepreneurial start-ups experience. That said, 5 years later I believe we have certainly validated a much-needed niche. It has been extremely rewarding to do what we do. To heal the broken and to provide some sense of hope to individuals and couples who have experienced numerous challenges during the journey to parenthood. Our Blossom Method “extended family” has grown and grown. We still receive Christmas cards from families we worked with 5 years ago and so we feel in a sense like their children are our children.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Blossom Method is an out-patient therapy practice specifically for individuals and couples experiences challenges during the reproductive journey. Some areas of specialty include: (loss, termination, complex genetic testing, NICU deliveries, infertility, post-partum depression)
The Blossom Method has become more than just a place to go for therapy. It has developed into a vast community of people sharing similar experiences and finding strength and support in one another’s’ personal journeys and struggles.
We work with some of the most incredible OB-Gyn practices who possess a real drive and sensitivity around the mental health of their patients.
Additionally what sets us apart is two-fold One, is our “access.” It’s our fervent commitment to the doctors we work with and the patients we treat and support. Most of our OB’s call us and text us directly to our cell phones because they know we will not allow their patients to fall through the cracks. Second, our patients know that we will go “above and beyond” to ensure that they receive the support they so desperately seek.
What were you like growing up?
I think I was always a very social person, and fascinated by everyone’s individual stories. I was the “advice giver”, and “good listener” in my social group. The more time I was able to spend with friends, or meeting new friends, made me the happiest. I think I have always been drawn to people that I can relate to, and who can relate to me. I am the youngest of 3 girls, and I think that helped me to have confidence.
Being around my sister’s friends while I was young, helped me to feel comfortable in all types of social situations with people much older or much younger than me. I am a very positive person and believe that happiness exists all around us not just in the obvious places. I work with my patients to celebrate the small often unnoticed joys in life. I relish in hearing people’s stories and watching people evolve into better versions of who they already were as they work through pain and disappointments.
