Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Hibdon.
Veritas Music and Learning Center was first born out of an idea resulting from experience. Nancy Hibdon, having a degree in Elementary Education with areas of concentration in Music and Science, spent decades successfully teaching and motivating students of all ages to reach greater potential in their musical and academic abilities.
After growing her home music studio to include a full weekly schedule of students plus a waiting list of others, Nancy and her husband Brian, who has a degree in finance and an entrepreneurial business background, deliberated on how best to share what they had learned to impact more students.
As they worked on the details, they found the opportunity to pair musical offerings along with academic assistance and enrichment at the same location. These offerings complemented one another extremely well, and in 2010 Veritas was born. Since then, Veritas has grown from one teacher to over 40 teachers in all subjects, instruments, and disciplines, and even includes tutoring in multiple languages, computer coding, Test Prep and much more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We don’t think this specific arrangement of music and academics has ever been done quite like this before. Coordinating hundreds of weekly clients with 40 teachers into 9 teaching rooms is quite a Tetris puzzle. We are trying to accomplish all of this is a small office suite. When we started, our suite had 5 offices and a common lobby area.
Over the years w have divided the rooms a much as we comfortably can, and now have 9 rooms and a nice family friendly waiting area. In addition, we host 2 music recitals each year. These recitals are very large events with over 400 music students performing in 16 sessions across 3 days in June and December. These recitals are important, as each student is given the opportunity to perform a solo piece, providing an opportunity for every individual to feel valued.
So, the wide scope of what we do is what makes Veritas so unique, of which we are so proud. However, that is also what makes this such a challenge to maintain.
Please tell us about Veritas Music & Learning Center.
We provide private, semi-private, and group classes in all musical disciplines from ages 3 through adult as well as academic subjects from preschool through adult.
ACADEMIC: ACT, EXPLORE, PLAN, PSAT, SAT and Prep. MATH, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Physics, Study Skills & Organization, Chess Scholars Classes and Tournaments, ART, Creative Writing, Research Paper, Computer Keyboarding, Handwriting, Hands-On Science, Computer Coding and Building a PC.
LANGUAGES: Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Chinese, Gujarati, and English as a Second Language.
MUSIC: Piano, Jazz Piano, Guitar, Classical Guitar, Jazz Guitar, Bass Guitar, Ukulele, Mandolin, Banjo, Voice, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone, Baritone, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Drums, Percussion, Marimba, Bells, Jazz Drums, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass.
We are most proud of the wide variety of our offerings, but also of our amazing teachers. Veritas has a unique gathering of incredibly talented, college-educated teachers who regularly use their skills in the professional performance world, as well as have the ability to mentor students.
What sets us apart is the combination of music tutoring and academic tutoring in the same location. We coordinate schedules for busy families so that they have multiple family members doing different things at the same time in one stop.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If we could start over, we would select a space that has more flexibility to grow.
