Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Choi.
Charles, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1994, in the suburbs of Chicago, I founded CHOi Design. The firm’s first product designs were for Weber Grills and Baxter Healthcare; the success of these products lead to lasting client relationships and company growth. Now in the heart of the West Loop, CHOi Design continues to design products that solidify the company as a leading industrial design firm for commercial, consumer, and medical based clients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not, every business has its challenges. The biggest challenge for my firm and for industrial design, in general, is the change in technology the world is facing today. Creativity and innovation are more important than ever! We have to work very hard to keep pace with the ever-changing technology and consumer trends which are moving at lightning speed. With social media and online forums booming, challenges arise in how to distinguish yourself and your business while displaying new and forward-thinking content.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about CHOi Design – what should we know?
We are industrial designers. We create new and innovative products in the housewares, commercial, and medical industries. We are best known for being the premier designer firm of Weber Grills for over the last 24 years. CHOi Design brings a fresh perspective and looks at a product category in a way that no other person or company could, allowing our ideas to have a presence in ever-expanding markets.
Our process focuses on having a client come to us with an idea for a new product or goals to update an existing product, creating different concepts that meet their objectives and translating the chosen design direction into 3D computerized data. At this point, we will prepare the concept to be engineered, prototyped and ready for mass production.
The fact that we have been in business this long as a small, single owner company and to see so many of our products successful in the market is my proudest achievement.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The most important aspect of my business that has allowed me to be successful are my employees. Not only are they passionate and talented, but they are some of the most hard-working and loyal employees. The newest employee in my office has been with me for 5 years and others have been with me for 10 years plus. Being able to work with such a creative and dedicated team who understands me really helps to bring out the best qualities in me and without them, I would not be where I am today.
