Meet Mathew Scarpelli of Hinsdale Music Studio in Hinsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mathew Scarpelli.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mathew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After graduating college in 2002, I took on jobs in a variety of fields. During this time I was also performing with multiple bands in clubs throughout Chicago. In early 2010, I was laid off from my day job and coincidentally, I found myself without a music project as well. I began teaching music lessons in the suburban neighborhood I was living in. Shortly thereafter, my friend approached me with the opportunity to open a lesson space in Hinsdale, IL. We started up in the fall of 2010 and slowly starting gaining students. By 2012, I was operating the studio on my own. I continued to grow my student base and services. Currently, I have 3 other instructors and I still teach six days a week.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, it’s been a smooth road; very even keel. I haven’t experienced extreme low or high points. My business continues to grow slowly which I am happy with. Everything I do involves being patient which I feel is important to overall satisfaction. I have a lot of things I’m working to improve on and that keeps me finding new ways to run my business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hinsdale Music Studio – what should we know?
Hinsdale Music Studio specializes in but not limited to rock n roll based instruction. We fuse traditional instruction with performance-based lessons. Students really love this part of our instruction. In addition to our lesson services we also put on events at local venues where students can showcase their skills and their hard work. Students can perform solo or in bands formed of other students who go to our studio. I’m most proud of the bond I’ve formed with students, parents, and the community overall. Much of my business comes from referrals and word of mouth which is very satisfying. We also offer recording packages and recording/engineering lessons as well. We have produced many of our students’ original music and helped see their musical ideas to fruition.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have had a lot of support and help from many people. First and foremost my wife has been very supportive and patient while building the business. My first business partner, Jason Miller, deserves much of the credit for the studio being in existence. He included me in on his opportunity for which I will forever be grateful. The parents of my students have really been supportive of me as well! As I said before, they have referred new students to me. They speak positively about to me other people I know and meet. My brother, Jon Scarpelli, has been a huge support as well. Not only is he an instructor but he also manages the business’ web content. He also is crucial in helping during the events we put on. I’ve been very fortunate to have all the help and support that I’ve had.
