Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Wang.
Julie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2002, Cindy Levine opened Sweet Mandy B’s Bakery serving old-fashioned desserts. She felt there was a need in the neighborhood for a place for families and friends to gather and enjoy a treat with one another. The store is named after her daughter Amanda and her son Brian. At the time of opening, there were a few employees that included 1 head baker, 1 cake decorator, and counter staff. While creating the menu for the store, the head baker and Cindy would try out different recipes and serve them in the lobby of Cindy’s high rise apartment. They welcomed feedback from the tenants which helped create the first menu. As business grew, so did the number of items on the menu.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Cindy was a single parent who spent time juggling the children’s schedule and the needs of the bakery. Often times you would see Amanda and Brian in the shop when they were younger. Space was an issue as the business grew. Eventually, there was a need to expand to what is now the cafe side.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sweet Mandy B’s Bakery story. Tell us more about the business.
