Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Kemp.
Born Darnell Freemen, enduring difficulties early in life, given up at birth by a 17-year-old mother, already with a 2-year-old, and spending the first 5 years of his life in two foster homes, before being raised on a farm by his adoptive parents and renamed after his father. He has experienced adversity which makes him a compassionate and sensitive motivational speaker, bringing his unique story of loss, courage, and success through his life experiences to his audiences who will be left inspired, motivated and empowered. The following is a quote from a recent speaking engagement:
“Leaders, as well as winners, are a rare breed. The ability to communicate what it takes to be a leader and a winner is also a rare talent. Lee is a member of both exclusive clubs.” Alternatively stated, he has been there and done that in the field of excellence both as a wrestler and as a motivational speaker.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One big struggle along my road to success was the United States led boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games that was held in Moscow Russia. I trained and focused my entire life on those Olympic Games in 1980. I was 23 years old and was absolutely devastated. Having overcome that I credit as one of the greatest triumphs of my life.
Lee Kemp Motivational Speeches, Lectures, and Workshops – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I also have the distinction of beating Dan Gable (arguably the most successful and recognized US wrestler ever) in his Olympic comeback attempt in 1976, when I was 18 years old and Dan was 26, and already an Olympic Champion from the 1972 Olympics.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was being selected to coach the 2008 US Freestyle Wrestling team that competed in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing China. It was 38 years since I was denied my opportunity to compete in the 1980 Olympic Games that I was able to represent the United States in the Olympic Games as coach of the men’s Freestyle Wrestling Team. It was a very proud moment for me.
