Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Hamilton.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I wasn’t always a baker, although I thought myself to be as I made graham cracker crusted, jelly bean infused chocolate jello for my family at age 10. Ever tried chocolate jello? Don’t. I have always had the passion of making people food, it’s such a simple way to bring joy to others. Let’s just say I needed to hone my craft. I opened up The Sugar Circle in 2012 with no business plan and only home baking experience, but I had two things that I knew would never let me fail, drive and the desire to make people happy. It has grown organically and I’m always so excited for the next adventure!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Learning the in’s and outs of business by jumping in head first is not exactly the conventional way of doing things. I found myself taking naps in an office chair as I worked all day and through the night. I made many sacrifices though the years as I tried to balance being a mom, figuring out how to run a business and teaching myself everything cake related in between.
Please tell us about The Sugar Circle.
The Sugar Circle is a custom cake shop making modern sweets made the old fashioned way, from scratch and with lots of love! We are not only known for making one of a kind custom cakes, but our Cinnamon Roll Sunday! You can’t beat made from scratch cinnamon rolls fresh from the oven, can you?! Our buttercream is fluffy and not to sweet and we flavor it using fresh fruits, no preservatives or funky ingredients found in this place! Our shop is on the beautiful, quaint and historic Woodstock Square. Just a train ride away from the bustle of the city. We have fun with our food, staff and customers and promise you will always be greeted with a smile.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing, the learning experience makes this place what it is today.
