Today we’d like to introduce you to Said Al-Hallaj.
Said, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
AllCell is a tech-transfer company from Illinois Tech and was founded in 2001. AllCell was the first tenant in Illinois Tech’s Tech Park and left in 2009 to our current location on 41st and Western in Chicago’s Back-of-the-Yard Neighborhood. AllCell was founded to commercialize a thermal management technology that makes Li-ion batteries safer and last longer. The research was kicked-off through a major Illinois Tech grant funded by Army Research office to develop Power Packs for Soldier of Future Program.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Early on, during the Illinois Tech days, we struggled with fund raising and technology validation. Since we moved out, we had major struggle with growing the business and working capital. We also are facing tough competition from Asian competitors.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
AllCell Technologies designs and manufactures lithium-ion battery packs for portable, stationary, and transportation applications. Our patented PCC thermal management technology allows production of compact, lightweight, and long-lasting batteries.
AllCell’s thermal management technology is based on the use of phase change materials (PCM) to surround each lithium-ion cell, absorbing and conducting heat away to dramatically extend the life of the cells and prevent fire or damage to the battery.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a small town in North of Jordan on the boarder with Syria called Ramtha. I studied in a public school and went to the nearby Jordan University of Science and Technology where I earned my Bachelor and Masters degree in Chemical Engineering before moving to Chicago to finish my PhD studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology. I am a big football (soccer fan) and sports fan in general. I am intrigued by history and religion and love traveling for leisure.
