Today we’d like to introduce you to Stefano Kontos.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My father started this business back in October 1983. We were a struggling new business that was attempting to be a 24-hour place that was close to Division Street and other nightlife at that time. My entire family worked to help alleviate labor costs. We could help a lot since we were 6 kids in the family. My 2 sisters worked as waitress’s I worked at 15 years old as busboy/juicer/cashier/cook whenever I had time. My brother primarily worked the night shift as a cook/manager. He was used to the hours because he was working previously down the block as a bouncer at Mothers and Hangge Uppe. It was rough for a couple of years and there were times when we didn’t think we could make it. My father James Kontos came up with the idea of having an outside patio during the summer since we had such a large sidewalk area. It became successful and shortly after that everyone was opening alfresco dining. The city took note of this and started to issue outdoor patio permits, our permit was #00001. The first at the time. We have made friends with many celebrities who came in like Oprah Winfrey, Danny Aiello, Mini Driver and much more including George Lucas. We were originally at 1 E. Chestnut St. until December 31st, 1999, then moved to our new location across the street at 6 E. Chestnut January 1st, 2000. As our logo suggests “we never miss a beat”. We look forward to the future for many more years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a tough road in beginning but my father said it would take 2 years. He promised and it did.

A 24-hour operation that serves breakfast all day. We specialize in omelets, fresh squeezed orange juice, waffles and pancakes. We are very proud in the speed that we get food out and our wonderful service.
