Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Buehler.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started as a Ski Instructor Apprentice when I was 15 years old and quickly moved to a full Ski Instructor. I was then asked to work inside in our rental shop and within two seasons was promoted to Rental Manager, Cashier Manager and shortly after a Recreation Manager. While working as the assistant to our Area Director I learned many new skills and the ins and outs of our area. I went to Illinois State University to pursue a degree in Recreation Management and once I graduated took over as the full time Superintendent of Recreation for Four Lakes Recreation/Alpine Snowsports. I stayed as the Superintendent for two years until the Director left the company to pursue a new opportunity. I was promoted to Director and have been in this role for going on 3 years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One obstacle I face is juggling and balancing the difference in seasons here. During the summer months we are almost like a private park district which caters to our residents. We have four swimming pools, tennis courts, a boathouse, volleyball courts, party rooms and resident events. Throughout those months I still have to focus on the ski area and attempt to bring in new groups, sponsors, etc.
Another challenge was having my predecessor leave mid-way through a season. It was a tough month or so after, but we made it through as a team. Without my management team, and their staff, Four Lakes would not be the destination it is today.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Four Lakes Alpine Snowsports – what should we know?
We are a Midwest ski and snowboard area that specializes in lessons for all ages.
Whether it’s your first time on the snow, or you just need a refresher, we’re the place to go! We are known for our group classes, private lessons and terrain park.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that open mindedness, transparency, and a true passion for what we do here at Four Lakes is what makes us as an area so successful. There are a group of us that are “lifers”, some people have worked here for Four Lakes for going on 30+ years. That’s something that’s unique and helps us to offer a friendly, extended family like feel to our guests.
