Meet Amit Mehta of TechVoo in DuPage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amit Mehta.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amit. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got an early start fixing computers for my high school teachers on the weekends and even became an A+ Certified technician when I was 16. After studying Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, I was recruited to Silicon Valley by a semiconductor company.

I had the tech know-how but lacked the talent required for sales, which became evident as I traveled to Europe trying to sell semiconductors. Wanting to sharpen my sales skills, I went into something I knew nothing about — real estate. It was a crash course, but over the course of working full time in it for a year and half, it taught me so much about my strengths and weaknesses. It was the toughest job I’ve ever had and the most rewarding.

A move back to Illinois also brought my move back into technology, which is the work that makes me happiest. Armed with new skills in sales, I knew I could make money in this industry. There was one big hurdle left that most “computer guys”, self-included, struggle with — laptop disassembly.

To get more comfortable with that, I became a Dell Certified Systems Expert doing Dell warranty work for business customers. After three months of taking laptops apart, I could do it with my eyes closed.

TechVoo began with a desire to help people and companies with their computer problems. We fix hardware, deploy cloud services, replace servers, do I.T. service contracts, clean viruses, configure and install operating systems, tune up systems, put in networks and fix them, and generally fix just about anything that needs fixing. We also design, develop and implement websites and web applications.

Consumers want it done right and they want it done fast, while price is a secondary consideration.

This presents TechVoo with a huge opportunity to provide a high-quality alternative to fixing computers. This company has grown at least 20 percent every year since opening our first brick and mortar store in September 2009.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always going to be challenges along the way when growing a business. Being able to take those stresses and struggles and turning them into opportunities to develop has allowed me to achieve more success. Choosing a team that is passionate about TechVoo’s mission and goals has also allowed us to expand and start franchising.

TechVoo – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
TechVoo provides a single source for all technology related needs for both businesses and residential clients. When you think about auto repair, what are your options? Of course, you have the dealership, where most people will go while the car is in warranty.

Then you think of all the other local places whose name you recognize; PepBoys, AutoZone, Car-X, Midas, Meineke, AAMCO, Jiffy Lube, Goodyear, and a host of others. The point is, you have reliable auto repair options that you’ve heard of and can trust.

Now think of the same thing for your computers. When they’re new and under warranty, you may turn to the manufacturer. After that, most people can only name Best Buy (Geek Squad) or “the guy they know” as their alternative. Geek Squad suffers from low customer satisfaction and high cost and turnaround time. “The guy they know” is not always available, cannot be an expert in every new technology, and varies in consistency.

Where are the Midas and PepBoys’ of the computer services industry? They don’t exist. So most people are left to the cost, speed, and quality of the big-box retailer or a local person without the systems and infrastructure to fully support their needs. It’s two extreme ends with a missing middle market for the masses. A highly profitable missing middle market.
