Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Williams.
Charlie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2001, I started producing small billiard sporting events. At first just regionally but drew in some top world ranked pros. Then later started to expand to bigger events and other states. I didn’t have a degree in business or marketing, but seem to have a knack for it all. I learned from a combination of trial and error and watching other promoters on what they did that worked, and what didn’t work. My competitive edges were thinking outside the box and willingness to try new things. And I am persistent with a belief that anything you can envision can be accomplished with will power.
Eventually Dragon Promotions was producing events all over the country from IL, NY, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Boston, Louisiana, Atlanta, Florida. The next step was international. We expanded into South Korea which everyone told me would be impossible. Teaming up with global conglomerate Brunswick Corp in their Billiards & Bowling Division (based not far from Chicago), we in 2 years’ time grew billiards exponentially in Korea to where we had our TV program on the nation’s top sports channels.
Philippines and China came next. And soon we started producing other sports events such as soccer and crossover events into music and celebrity parties.
Fast forward to today, Dragon Promotions is now the parent company of other subsidiaries such as Orlando Synergy Marketing (fully functional integrated marketing firm), the FTT Florida Tennis Tour, the World Straight Pool Championship in New York City, Andy Cloth & Fabrics, online media campaign manager for politicians in Wyoming and FL. I am also the CEO of World Sports Alumni as well as the CEO of Revolution Medical and CMO of BottleDeck Decking.
On a daily basis, with the assistance of my capable team, my day consists of dealing with NFL pros, boxing champions, construction companies, manufacturers, politicians and doctors.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing worth doing is ever smooth and easy. But if you want to be a master at something, you have to have passion and work ethic to the point people think you are crazy. That’s what it takes to be in the 1 percent of the 1 percentile of the world. Then you are world class.
Struggles include dealing with critics, dealing with unreliable employees or partnerships. Not everyone will always share your vision. And it takes time to weed those out. But in the end if you keep pressing forward, you will find the people you need and have the team you dreamed of. In the end, always be the most reliable person you know. Good things will follow.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dragon Promotions story. Tell us more about the business.
Dragon Promotions is an expert business developer and marketing entity. Whether putting together a global TV production, or piecing together a complex business manufacturing deal, booking celebrities & endorsements, or developing a product into a global brand. We are incredibly diverse.
It’s hard to pick my favorite win. But I’m proud of the fact that our time equity spent in accomplishing goals is more efficient than any other company I know of. And the fact that we are built on integrity and our word matters. We always under-promise and over-deliver.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
My definition of luck is different. Luck is meaningless without the skills to take advantage of it. To me, luck really means windows of opportunity. In that way, I have had lots of luck in my life and career! For me, I’ve always been a believer in if something looks really good, go for it. I’m a man of action. And hope that’s something I will always remain to be.
