Thanks for sharing your story with us Sandy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The idea for Critter Sitters began in 1989. I was going through a few life changes not the least of which were recovering from surgery and changing to a vegetarian diet. I also had started volunteering with an animal rescue organization and I loved the feeling of making a difference in the life of a pet. I knew that I wanted to work with animals but I wasn’t sure just quite in what capacity. After praying about it the notion occurred to me that I could baby sit animals. Since I had never even heard of pet sitting I put the idea on the back burner until a few months later when a popular animal magazine ran an article on pet sitting. It was the first time I had heard that term. I knew then that I wanted to become a pet sitter.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Convincing people to take a chance on you is not easy especially when it comes to the welfare of their pets and the care of their homes. Overtime, with hard work and consistently proving my love of animals and my reliability people began to refer me to their neighbors and friends. Eventually, word of my service reached the local veterinary clinics who also began to refer me to their clients. To this day, I still feel the weight of responsibility with each new client and every sit I do.
As the concept of pet sitting became more popular other pet sitting services began to pop up. It would make me nervous to know that I had so much competition but after a while most of those new services closed while only the most dedicated remained.

Critter Sitters Pet Sitting Service is dedicated to taking the very best care of pets in the comfort of their own home. Whether a client is at work for the day, on vacation for the week or taking a quick weekend trip Critter Sitters is at their service to care for all of their pets. My team of sitters and I have experience in caring for all manner of pets and we can even administer pills, insulin shots and subcutaneous fluids.
Our clients log onto their very own on-line profile so all of our information is as up to date as possible. We leave notes during our visits but we also post pictures to our Critter Sitters Facebook page so clients can always check to see what their pets have been up to. We don’t mind texting updates and pictures to clients while they are way as well.
Most of all, my team and I love what we do. We genuinely enjoy visiting all those wonderful pets.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Currently, we are expanding our service into neighboring communities. The prospect of new clients, new pets and hiring sitters is very exciting.
One thing is certain, pets are full-fledged members of the family. As such the pet industry will continue to grow and it’s not just pet care. Medical advances such as animal chiropractic, acupuncture and water therapy are becoming ever more popular. Organic pet food stores are springing up. Veterinarians, groomers and trainers now bring their services to your home. It’s a good time to be a pet!
