Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Belmont.
Nancy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduate school, I worked as a speech language pathologist at two other firms over a span of ten years. I was staffed in a clinic occasionally, but spent most of my time in people’s homes working with younger children. I then went part time to take care of my daughter, and after a few months I felt ready to make a change. The woman I worked for at the time was an incredible mentor and inspired me to strike out on my own. Five years later, I am running my own successful private practice and have two other excellent clinicians working with my company.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I knew I’d have things to learn when it came to running the business…hiring people, managing them, handling billing, etc. That turned out to be true, but luckily I’ve had no major problems.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Beyond Words Speech Therapy story. Tell us more about the business.
Although we help children across a wide range of ages, we maximize our benefit to families by correcting issues early and focusing on the years between birth and preschool. Simply put, children under three need to be approached differently; this informs many of our strategies.
One of the more prominent examples is our practice of delivering therapy in the home versus a clinic setting. Working with a child in their home makes it easier for them to apply what they practice during therapy to the rest of their daily life. It puts parents at ease while simultaneously empowering to play a larger role in their children’s success.
We also do not shy away from trickier cases: trouble with infant feeding, difficulty processing language, and disorders on the autism spectrum are all treated by speech language pathologists. Those challenges are often the most rewarding. There’s nothing better than getting a Christmas card from a family you helped through a tough time with their toddler, and now you see them thriving in school.

Wow this is an amazing perspective and I wouldn’t have considered speech therapy for my preschooler. Now I realize it may be the perfect time to intervene and correct my daughter’s speech. It’s also so comforting that we don’t have to bring my daughter into an unfamiliar environment. I will definitely be connecting with Beyond Words.
