Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Amanas.
The owner Sam was born and raised in Kastoria, Greece, the fur capital of the world. As a child, he worked in the fur business. It was common for all children, teenagers, and young men to work in the fur business. At the age of 18, Sam moved to California and worked for a fur company. After 4 years, he traveled to the Chicagoland area to be close to family and continue working in the fur business. He worked downtown Chicago for many years before he opened his own business Highland Furs in Highland, Indiana in 1980. He has designed and manufactured beautiful and luxurious fur coats and jackets for many large retail department stores as well as his own personal label, Highland Furs.
Highland Furs has now grown and offers many more items and services. Highland Furs continues to manufacture and sell coats and jackets, as well as fur blankets, pillows, scarves, headbands, earmuffs, purses, and accessories. Highland Furs also offers cleaning for your fur items and storage for the summer in a climate and moisture controlled vault. Additional services are offered such as restyling and alterations.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every business has some struggles but we have been doing good all these years because of our loyal customers. We make everything in our own store so we keep prices very low compared to others in the area.

Highland Furs specializes in the design and manufacturing of luxurious fur items. The store has its original owner Sam Amanas and his wife who work to design and make any beautiful fur coat, jacket, or accessory for anyone.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Traveling and living in California.
