Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheri Zeman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sheri. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Always interested in design, a friend showed me the “rag-rolling” technique of faux finishing in 1986. After many many more projects in my own home, I discovered a week long class teaching a professional product line of decorative plasters and paints. After the class I immediately wanted at least 6 months of practice in the homes of friends and family. That was shortened to about 4 weeks as word spread. Shortly after that I became the distributor for Faux Effects International. My love of the products and the countless number of effects that can be created by using them has led to a successful school and contracting business spanning over 17 years. I also try to stay on the cutting edge of the design world and try to push the envelope on patterns and options that keep our industry current.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The recession was an incredibly difficult time since our industry is definitely a luxury item vs a necessity.
Faux Design Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in bringing the most valuable samples to the classroom that will recoup the tuition cost by offering sellable finishes. I believe we are most known for modern finishes that replicate high-end wall coverings. I am most proud of the repeat customers and word of mouth advertising that speaks volumes for our reputation in customer service. I think what sets us apart is the constant updating and additions of new products, tools and stencils that allow our customers to stay on the forefront of the industry.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! Chicago is a great place for design. There are a multitude of wonderful designers here that are eager to utilize the talents of decorative painters.
