Today we’d like to introduce you to Lembit Ruutelmann.
Lembit, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After working as an electrical engineer, I discovered my passion for math and became a high school math teacher. In 1999, after 8 years of teaching, I wanted to supplement my income.
With the encouragement of my wife’s aunt, who owned a tutoring business in North Carolina, I decided to start Ruutelmann Math Tutoring. My goal was to help students by providing “mentor-tutoring”. Being a former electrical engineer, I try to show students real-life applications of the math they learn in school.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a tutoring business does involve challenges (scheduling, billing, and helping students with special needs). An effective tutor is often “working himself out of a job” as they help students succeed. As a result, advertising is vital. Word of mouth is, by far, the best advertising.
Ruutelmann Math Tutoring – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Ruutelmann Math Tutoring offers mentor-tutoring services for students from kindergarten to college in the area of math. We test students and provide tutoring and materials to help fill in any gaps in their backgrounds. In addition, we help with instruction to guide students in completing homework. Also, we provide standardized test preparation, including the ACT, SAT, PSAT, COOP/HSPT, ASVAB, and GED. As a company, we are known for clarity of instruction and flexibility in scheduling. Parents do not sign any contracts, and pricing is reasonable.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing students having an “aha” moment or “now I get it” moment gives me goosebumps.
Seeing students succeed, whether in AP Calculus or learning their multiplication facts, is very rewarding.
Having parents respond to a price increase by emailing me “you deserve it” helps me believe I provide a valuable service at a reasonable price.
Pricing:
- Semi-private tutoring: $39 per session
- Private Tutoring: $51 per session
